We have completed many designs for wonderful clients in Kuching, Sarawak. We had the fantastic opportunity to work with them to bring their space’s design together. While the design implementation was a lot of fun, it got us thinking about how to share some of the areas we know many people struggle with. So, we thought of tips we wanted to share that might help you fill your space with more joy or at least make you far less stressed.

Give Yourself Ample TimeĀ

Honestly, setting up a room takes a lot of our time. You not only have to move furniture around, hang things on the walls, or make stunning bookshelves, but you also need to take the time to go out and purchase all the right stuff and put together the accessory placement and re-placement.

A good rule of thumb we have learned over the years as professional interior design firms are to estimate the amount of time you think and then multiply that by 20%. You want to know if this will take you a couple of hours or days. This will help align expectations around the appropriate time to pull together the design. Enough time must be given to adequately and intentionally pull together a beautiful space.

Be Ready To Improvise

We all know that “stuff” happens, and while we know it will happen, we typically freak out when something does happen. So, we will repeat it; something will always happen when implementing a design. When working with some of our clients, they sent me building plans for their living rooms, and the design was based on those measurements. If you have ever had the pleasure of building a house, you know that sometimes the builders may not stick to the plans strictly.

Don’t let problems get you down when updating your home decor. We opened our problem-solving minds to develop new solutions for our clients continuously.

Not Everything Needs to Look Insta-Ready

Are you afraid to invite others over because your home is messy? It can be exhausting to be Insta-Ready before having guests over, so stop trying and worry about it! Everybody wants to have that perfect shot to show to others. So, when it comes to your room, don’t be afraid to make it a space that brings you joy and is practical. Your designs should not focus on what will make the best Insta photo, but they should center around you as the client, as the family who will make memories in the space!

Emphasize What’s Important

One of the primary reasons we chose the interior design field was to help make a difference in people’s lives through a fantastic space that produces joy and a mission that helps bring attention. When a room has a design element linked to a bigger mission, you breathe life into the space that is so giving. You find connection and remembrance of this more significant purpose. You also get a fantastic opportunity to share the mission with any guests that enter the space.

Trust the Process

There are plenty of times when we start a project and get a couple of steps in, and instantly the doubt starts to set in. Sometimes, we didn’t feel like the furniture or lighting we chose to fit the space. It just felt big and out of balance with the space. Usually, we already had the result as we provided 3D renders of the room, so we had a better sense that it would all work out and fit in perfectly. We had to let the room come together first before taking anything away.

We hope you have found these tips helpful when implementing the interior design in your space. Want more creative tips for your home or want to share any additional tips you may have? We would love to hear you! Contact us to get the conversation started.
